Remembering Cancer Awareness Month...

The SCwSG volunteer team sends it heartfelt love and prayers to all who have experienced the daunting diagnosis of cancer. We honor all those who have fought the good fight, those who run the races and those who strive to find a cure.

We have taken a moment of silence at the SCwSG Headquarters to remember...

Our Foster/Adoption Home Story - May is Foster Care Awareness Month!

Adoption means you grew in your mommy’s heart instead of her tummy. –Author unknown
To be "mother" to someone who needs me means more now than ever. On February 18, 2010, my mother passed away and I realized how much I'd lost. My Father went to meet my Mother after a 15 year battle with Parkinson's disease on June 12, 2013As I review memories one thing rings true, they loved me

Two days after Mom died my best friend Jan died and as I mourned,
I began to think more intensely about children who are orphaned, need to be adopted or need foster care. Although I have no children of my own, I've never let that stop me from helping as many as possible. During more than twelve years as a professor and school teacher, teaching all grades and subjects to regular and special ed students which included severely disabled, blind, deaf, autistic, down syndrome, cocaine babies, severally abused, juvenile delinquents, while coaching swimming and track offered me many momentous experiences.

Today, I continue reaching out with hope and encouragement through our book's, speaking events, singing, and leading an amazing team of international volunteers through our nonprofit, Second Chance with Saving Grace-helping hurting people and animals. I've babysat since I was eleven and earned a Ph.D. in Human Services and Counseling Psychology while growing through difficult times that included chronic illness, divorce and almost having my legs amputated. These experiences continue to motivate me to try to help as many people as possible and to have a significant and lasting relationship with children.

I spoke to Paul about my consistent desire to provide a safe place for broken children to heal through foster care and adoption, in November of 2010. Paul gave a long list of why this wasn’t a good idea. Most of the reasons were based on fear: fear that I wasn’t healthy enough; fear of the financial burden; and most significantly, fear of the lifestyle changes required to be a parent. I wasn’t deterred and did what I always do when confronted with the unknown: I prayed.

One day Paul came home and said, “Okay, go for it! I can see it will be more harmful to you not to try than any of my reasons why we shouldn’t.” He’d talked to friends and it was obvious that God had worked on his heart. He was now excited to share his love of the outdoors with hurting kids.

We found out that there wasn't a foster home available in our county and neighboring counties so we began our certification process immediately. Since April 2011, we've been officially offering a safe place for broken hearts to heal in our home. It has been time-intensive, costly and emotion-filled.
Our faith is keeping us strong, courageous and able to work through the ups and downs that family life brings. Our home is bursting with healthy family memories, working through consequences and overcoming challenges while offering hope, joy, and love.

One day when I’m gone, my children, those I foster for a while or those we give forever homes, will know THEIR Mom loved them, and they will be sure to pass that transforming love on.
As of today, we've had over 15 foster children, we've adopted 4 and have guardianship of 2.  We've had the middle of the night children and one who came covered in blood. We are SO thankful for your help collecting items for all ages, hobbies, and backgrounds.

Thank you for keeping us in your prayers!

Our SCwSG mission is to help hurting people and animals and provide opportunities for volunteers to do the same while using their gifts and talents to live a life of impact and purpose. All with a heart to help are welcome. We offer a safe place for everyone to be a part of a family that cares and is making a difference.

Our foster/adoption Home We are a safe place for little hearts to heal! When Paul and Diane found out that there are approx. 6,800 foster children in Colorado and 550 needing adoption AND that there was not a Foster Home available in their County they immediately made plans to get re-certified, ready to open their hearts and home.

Duties and Responsibilities  There are nearly half a million young people living in foster care in America. The goal is to return the children to their homes but when that is not possible they need long-term care and/or adoption. It's been an intense process. Duties include: parental guidance/support, face to face with CASA volunteers, social workers and guardian's, upkeep of CPR + First Aid training, daily journals, Love & Logic training, they've passed several background checks, have a bed and dresser for every child; they are prepared for: face to face time with birth parents, addressing medical and dental needs, transportation to and from activities, school, medical or therapeutic appointments, participation in treatment decisions, creating clear and consistent behavioral boundaries, providing financial, emotional and educational support, providing meals, clothing... and a stable, consistent, culturally sensitive and nurturing home environment.  Wow!

Today's Devotional brought to you courtesy of Prayer Warrior Laurie L. Thomas

John 3:16-17

New King James Version (NKJV)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

For God so loved the world....the world, one of the meanings listed for the original Greek word meaning "world" is the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family. Everyone reading this fits into that category! We are all inhabitants on this earth, members of the human family. That means For God so loved you, me, each of us! Not just those who love Him or those who are obedient to Him, but all of us right where we are today, this very minute! Whether we are struggling with a temptation, an addiction, an affliction, or on a mountain top doing well, God sees us and loves us! He loves us so very much He sacrificed His Only Begotten Son, and Jesus would not have had it any other way. When Jesus prayed in the Garden He asked for the cup to pass from Him, but knowing what had to be done He concluded with, "not My will but Thine be done."

God the Father and God the Son did this so you and I would not perish but have everlasting life. Ever have someone do something nice for you only to have them constantly remind you of what they did for you? That is not what Jesus will ever do! He did not come to point fingers and condemn but to offer us everlasting life with Him in His Kingdom! Wherever you find yourself today remember you are loved! You are worth more than gold or silver! You are worth more to God anything! After all He gave His Son for you!

Father, Redeemer You are God. You did not have to save me but because of Your great love for me You did! I love You LORD because You first loved me! I know that I stumble and fall often, forgive me for all of the times I fail You! Strengthen me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to be Your heart, hands and feet to someone today. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Courage comes from Prayer

Esther 4:11-16
New King James Version (NKJV)
11 “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that any man or woman who goes into the inner court to the king, who has not been called, he has but one law: put all to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter, that he may live. Yet I myself have not been called to go in to the king these thirty days.” 12 So they told Mordecai Esther’s words.

13 And Mordecai told them to answer Esther: “Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace any more than all the other Jews. 14 For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai: 16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

Esther, and orphan who had been crowned queen, has been called to a task that could cost her her life. Her cousin Mordecai has just disclosed the evil plot to annihilate all of the Jews from the Mede-Persian Empire and asked her to plead their case before the king. Esther had some real fears to contend with. She had become queen because the first queen, Vashti, had refused to obey the king, she knew first-hand the cost of disobedience. She had hidden her Jewish heritage from everyone when she had been taken as a candidate for queen and now she had not been called into the king's presence for 30 days and it would violate the law to go before the king without being called. The task itself seemed fruitless as Persian law stated that an edict from the king could not be overturned even by the king himself.
The fears were real, the task seemed hopeless yet her cousin reminded her that she may have been called "for such a time as this." Esther asks for fasting from everyone. Fasting in the Jewish culture was a time of intimate prayer and fellowship with God. Esther needed courage to do what God had called her to do, so she prayed. Not only did she pray but she enlisted an entire people group of believers to prayer with her and for her and then she resolved that God's will be done in her life. She would do what she was called to do no matter the cost.

Today what has called called you to do. Perhaps, like Esther, you have been called to such a time as this! You may feel insignificant, invisible, unworthy or ill-equipped. Drop to your knees and pray and enlist prayer warriors to pray for you and with you! Then, like Esther, confidently do what God has called you to do. He will equip you and go with you!

Father, Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Thank You for the power we have in prayer. Thank You for friends and family that You have given us who will pray with us and for us! Thank You for going with us into every situation and equipping us for the tasks You have created us for! Father I pray that You would be with me and each one that feels they are not ready, worthy, equipped or fearful of what might come from obedience to You. Give us Your courage and strength to be obedient and do all that You have created us to do. Thank You for Prayer! In Jesus powerful name, amen!

Why we want to adopt and provide foster care. By Dr. Diane Dike

Adoption means you grew in your mommy’s heart instead of her tummy. –Author unknown

To be "mother" to someone who needs me means more now than ever. On February 18, 2010, my mother passed away and I realized how much I 'd lost. As I review memories one thing rings true, she loved me.

Although I have no children of my own, I've never let that stop me from helping as many as possible especially during my twelve years of teaching severely disabled,
juvenile delinquents, special and physical education, and coaching sports. I continue reaching out with hope and encouragement through our book's, speaking events, singing, leading our team of international volunteers through our nonprofit, Second Chance with Saving Grace that helps hurting people and animals. I've babysat since I was eleven and earned a Ph.D. in Human Services and Counseling Psychology while growing through difficult times that included chronic illness, divorce and almost having my legs amputated. These experiences continue to motivate me to have a significant and lasting relationship with children.

My husband, Paul, and I were certified to be foster parents 11 years ago, but with moving, travel plans, and life commitments, the timing didn’t line up. I spoke to Paul about my remaining desire to provide a safe place for broken children to heal and about adopting if the opportunity arose in November of 2010. Paul gave a long list about why this wasn’t a good idea. Most of the reasons were based on fear: fear that I wasn’t healthy enough; fear of the financial burden; and most significantly, fear of the lifestyle changes required to be a parent. I wasn’t deterred and did what I always do when confronted with the unknown: I prayed.

The process has been time-intensive, costly and emotion-filled, but we are ready.
Our faith will keep us strong, courageous and able to work through the ups and downs. Our hearts and loving arms are open to a home bursting with healthy family memories that will offer a lifetime of faith, hope, joy and love. And one day when I’m gone, my children will know THEIR Mom loved them, and they will be sure to pass that love on.

Every child will have a Love Kit, Blanket and Bear
